Calamity Awareness in the PM Classes

Last Friday, July 23, the entire preschool afternoon class got together to hear about a short talk about calamities. The Robins, Cardinals and Blue Jays Pm class learned about the focus calamity which is Earthquake. Teacher Lala showed a short Power point presentation on what to do before, during, and after an Earthquake.

A short video showing an earthquake drill was seen by the kids after the power point.

Of course, the kids experienced having their very own earthquake drill inside the classroom. They remembered to DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON.

As part of the drill, the kids lined up and went outside after the “earthquake”.

Blooming Buddies

When I was still in Kindergarten, I can barely remember anything I did in school back then. Maybe because the activities were too boring and so mechanical that I didn’t even bother to store it in my memory. The  Nest teachers were reminiscing their Kindergarten class activities last week and I can’t even think of an experience that I could share with them. Well, there was only one I could remember vividly. How I met my first best friend. Going to school seemed to be much more fun because I would be seeing my friend and after school we would play together in the playground while waiting for our fetchers. Last week I saw how close my students already are with each other that they have started calling each other best friends. It was a truly happy experience seeing them write love notes to each other.

Young friendship is the sweetest. :)

These are just some of the comments heard from the Grade 3-Agila kids after having tasted the chicken quesadilla prepared by Mommy Diwa and Daddy Dudes for AND with them, as part of the activities this Nutrition month.

Mommy and Daddy took turns in demonstrating the steps in preparing the quesadilla and let the kids make their own.

We’ve Got Mail!

Mail time, mail time, mail time, mail tiiiiiiiime!
Here’s the mail that never fails, it makes me wanna wag my tail,
When it comes I wanna wail, maaaaaaaiiiiiilll!

Think Blue and Joe (of Blue’s Clues) the only ones who got mail?
Nah-uh. The Blue Jays AM children got mail too!

Last July 19, 2010, our class talked about the post office – what it is for and who works there.

To make everything more exciting, we did not only imagine how a post office looks like but we also made our own mailboxes (using our old shoeboxes) where we can receive mail from. When the flags are up, it means we’ve got mail!

So, what are you waiting for? Send us your mail. We know you want to :)

[Blue Jays AM Mailboxes are located outside Room104 of Nest]

Doctor Mommy Mariz Nualla Visits the Blue Jays AM Class!

“The Doctor is in!” in the Blue Jays AM classroom last July 20, 2010.

A hospital is definitely considered as one of the places found in one’s neighborhood. But instead of going to a hospital, the hospital was the one who came to us through the person of Doctor Mommy Mariz Nualla! She is an obstetrician-gynecologist at FEU-NRMF in Fairview.

During her visit, she told us what doctors do in the hospital and she gladly showed us the different tools found in a doctor’s kit. She was so nice that she even let us try to use some of her things such as the face mask, the hair cap, the flashlight, the thermometer, the tool to monitor one’s blood pressure, the tongue depressor, and one of our favorites — the stethoscope!

We got inspired and had so much fun during Mommy Mariz’ visit that we even made our own doctor’s kit the next day!

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you Doctor Mommy Mariz for giving us your time and sharing with us your knowledge even if you are a one busy doctor.

Well, we admit that some of us are still afraid of injections (hindi siya parang kagat lang ng langgam!), but we are definitely not scared of doctors anymore!

♥ Rainbow Colored Day ♥

They say that, when you look at a cupcake, you can’t help but smile because of the way the colors pop in front of your eyes. There is indeed no better way to end the cloudy days than treating ourselves to a rainbow-colored delight: CUPCAKES =)

The Sparrows and Mockingbirds classes learned colors and numbers by decorating this sweet treat.  Let the sweetest children teach you how it’s done =)

First stop, choose the flavor of your cupcake/s

Spread chocolate circles and syrup on top

And taaaddaaahhhh!… you have your own “mommy and daddy” cupcakes all ready for munching (and for sharing too) =)

Don’t forget to flash a sweet smile for that added punch!

And after all the work, you might get a smiley sticker for a good job.

So we suggest that you try it at home.

And with a smile like this:

…surely your blues will be swept away. =)=)=)

Twisting with English #2

HOW TO PLAY TWISTER IN ENGLISH?

Topic: Knowing the Purpose of the Author (in a paragraph or story)

1. Discuss the different possible purposes of an author. It should be clear to the students how they are different from each other.

2. Ask the students to get one thing inside the room.

3. Ask the students to stand on any circle in the twister mat.

4. Assign a specific purpose on each circle.

5. Explain to the students that they need to sell their thing to the teacher by using the specific purpose they are tasked to do so.

6. After saying their sentences, ask them to go to another circle.

7. Change the purpose of the colors until everyone had the chance to sell their product in different purposes.

8. Of course, have fun!

And the most creative “salesman” in 6-Martines is… Kyle Punongbayan.

A future businessman? =)

Here is his winning speech!

Purpose: Criticize (and a bit of entertainment) =)

“You should buy Artline whiteboard marker and not Boardmaster. Why? In Boardmaster, it’s so hard to refill the ink. You have to twist it hard at the bottom which will give you a hard time, and the ink will likely spill on you. Like this (showing his hand with red ink)! But with Artline marker, you just need to push the clicker (click!), and dip it into an ink! It’s so easy! Your writing will be so clear and so black. So buy Artline marker now!”

Checkout what the rest of the class “tried” to sell!

Twisting with English #1

HOW TO PLAY TWISTER IN ENGLISH?

Topic: Kinds of Sentences

1. Have at least four students on the twister mat.

Look how excited the Grade 3 Agila is!

2. Assign the kinds of sentences for each color.

Example:

  • RED- Declarative Sentence
  • BLUE- Interrogative Sentence
  • YELLOW- Exclamatory Sentence
  • GREEN- Imperative Sentence

3. Explain to the students that they need to make their own sentence according to the circle they are in.

4. The game will be like a Stop-Dance game wherein the rest of the students will sing a song, and the students on the mat will dance until the teacher says “Stop”.

For the third graders, on the first round they sang “Everybody Dance Now”, as suggested by Carlo; “Peanut butter” on the second round which was requested by Andrea; and “Nobody, Nobody But You” as demanded by Andrei. =)

A camera phone sure can’t capture the Agila’s dance moves!

5. When the students state their sentences, make sure they say out loud the punctuation mark that should be used.

Example:

  • My name is Kaio Dancel (period) –Kaio
  • Where are you going (question mark) – Bela
  • The house is burning (exclamation point) – Nicolette
  • Please give me a glass of water (period) – Veda

6. Have fun!

Calamity Awareness: Equipping Children During Earthquakes

July 23, 2010, the preschool classes talked about one of the most dreaded calamities: earthquakes. This activity was done to equip children with life-saving skills and knowledge in events where earthquakes occur.

To begin the activity, the children had a community meeting time.

After kamustahan and singing songs, the talk began. The springboard used was the word calamity. Children associated this word with bagyo, flood, and fires. Other calamities were briefly discussed like volcanic eruptions, fire, typhoon, and many more. These thoughts lead to realizing that earthquake is a calamity too.

A power point presentation aided the discussion of what an earthquake is, and what to do before, during, and after an earthquake.

The children were taught three important word: drop, cover, and hold on.

The children then watched a short video on what to do during an earthquake in a school setting. They were really engaged with the topic and video that they even asked to watch it again. To see the video, click Earthquake Drill At School.

After watching the clip, the classes took turns in practicing.

Children can’t stop talking about earthquakes after! It was truly a hands-on learning for them.

SPEeD Up!

July 17, 2010. An ordinary Saturday for most parents but for the 25 parents of Nest who came to attend “SPEeD UP”, Nest’s first SPED interaction, it was an enriching and encouraging time.

Bal Ligot, chair of Speech Pathology, College of Allied Medical Professionals, UP Manila shared with the parents the “Role Of Language in Communication.” He highlighted components of language and shared some ways that parents could help children in language and speech development.

Dolores Cheng shared her journey as the parent of a 16-year old boy with developmental delays. She shared also how her journey took her to the founding of Center for Possibilities Inc., a group that is “committed to creating a compassionate and nurturing community for individuals with special needs and their families – one where they will be empowered, understood, and respected.”
